“Die Forelle” (The Trout), Op. 32 is one of Schubert’s most expressive songs. The sound of flowing water and of the lively trout swimming and jumping all around can be heard in the piano accompaniment, as well as in the repeated leaps of a fifth throughout the vocal line.

“In a clear brooklet there shot all around in happy hastiness,
the moody trout, just like an arrow.
I stood on the waterside and watched in sweet peace
the lively little fish’s bath in the clear brooklet.

A fisherman with a rod stood content on the bank
and watched in cold blood how the little fish wandered.
As long as the water is clear, so I thought, he wouldn’t take it,
so he didn’t catch the Trout with his hook.

Then finally the thief waited too long.
he made the brooklet treacherously muddy,
and Ah! Just as I had thought
